PRESENTATION OUTLINE

In order to optimize patient outcomes while also minimizing side effects, it is important to consider patient safety at each major step of cannabis initiation and use. Prior to initiation of cannabis, a screen for precautions, contraindications, and potential drug interactions should be conducted. The safety of administration routes and strains should be considered in order to establish the best-suited product for the patient to use. To minimize side effects, a low-dose, slow titration method is suggested for initiation, while keeping concomitant medication doses stable. After achieving an optimal dose, a monitoring frequency should be set.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Describe key considerations when initiating and titrating medical cannabis safely
  2. Discuss precautions, contraindications, and potential drug interactions
  3. Assess cannabis strain selection and initial route of administration, including a low-dose, slow titration strategy, and taper
  4. Outline considerations for follow-up assessments on medical cannabis patients
